Pursuing a career in medicine?

Open the door to medical school with one of Work the World’s new Global Health Projects.

This is an exclusive two-week experience in an overseas hospital that boosts your academic profile and paves the way to university. Shadowing local doctors, you’ll get experience that all but a select few have. And you’ll get a professional reference at the end to prove it.

What is a Global Health Project?

On a Global Health Project with Work the World you’ll spend two weeks getting medical work experience in a low-resource hospital overseas, shadowing mentors (qualified doctors) as you rotate through key departments.

The aim of this project is for you to get clinical experience that you can’t get anywhere else — you’ll see how local staff treat everything from common illnesses to tropical diseases. And you’ll come away from the experience prepared to tackle university one step ahead of your peers.

  • Medical work experience

What are the benefits?

  • Strengthen your academic profile
  • Impress medical schools with experience within a clinical setting
  • Build a network of future doctors to tap into during your career
  • Gain perspective that will reframe your view of the NHS
  • Build your confidence by stepping out of your comfort zone
  • Get an idea of where you might specialise later in your career
  • Get a reference from a Clinical Director to add to your portfolio
  • Medical work experience

Eye-opening clinical experience

During your Global Health Project, you’ll see an enormous range of advanced cases and unfamiliar practices. These vary depending on the destination you choose. But the list below should give you some idea of the kinds of things you might see:

  • Tropical diseases
  • High patient volumes
  • Cultural beliefs influencing medical practices
  • Doctors using ingenuity in the absence of equipment

One of your biggest learnings will be how local staff still provide a high level of care even when resources are incredibly low.

At the end of the experience, you’ll get a professional reference from the hospital’s Clinical Director.

This lends weight to your academic portfolio and you can use it to help prove what you achieved.

Primary Healthcare Experience

One afternoon after your hospital placement our team will take you to visit a primary healthcare clinic. Each experience varies by destination, but this will take place in settings like maternity, vaccination, or HIV clinics.

This complements your experience in the hospital as it gives you a better understanding of how the local healthcare system works as a whole.

The Primary Healthcare Experience will be eye-opening in that you will be able to directly compare it to services offered by the NHS — sometimes the differences can be stark.

What else happens outside the hospital?

Your clinical experience is the focus of your trip. But we will help you make the most of your time outside the hospital.

Your afternoons and weekends are packed full of activities and travel experiences. Some are part of the structure of the trip, others are optional extras.

Other afternoon activities include:

  • Clinical teaching seminars hosted by hospital staff
  • Q&A sessions with local medical students
  • Local language lessons
  • Learn to cook local dishes with our catering team

Another big part of what makes the Work the World experience memorable is the fun you’ll have with friends — new and old — while you’re overseas.

So, outside of the activities listed you’ll have plenty of downtime to get to know each other.

What’s included?

The service you get with Work the World is comprehensive. It includes, but is not limited to:

  • Pre-departure preparation with our UK team
  • Structured, mentored hospital experience
  • Additional experience in a primary clinical setting
  • Private, catered accommodation
  • 24/7 in-country team
  • Airport pick up and drop off
  • Organised afternoon activities
  • + more
